Freemasonry is one of the oldest and most well-known fraternal organizations in the world, with origins that date back to the late Middle Ages. Its roots are thought to lie in the guilds of stonemasons and cathedral builders who, during the construction of great European cathedrals, formed secretive societies that bound themselves to certain moral and ethical codes. These early members were skilled craftsmen, and as the construction of cathedrals and castles waned, the guilds gradually evolved into social organizations that accepted men from all walks of life, not just stonemasons.
At its core, Freemasonry is built around the principles of brotherhood, charity, and moral integrity. Members, known as Freemasons or Masons, are encouraged to live by a moral code and to help one another, as well as their communities. They use symbols—like the square and compass, which represent the principles of morality and virtue—and rituals, which have been passed down through generations, to foster a sense of shared identity and purpose.
